During these extremely upsetting and unsettling times that cut through all divisions amongst us whether they be ethnic, cultural, racial, sexual, political, religious, educational, professional, financial, physical, age related or any other distinction, we cry out for health, justice, the cessation of hostilities, the restoration of livelihoods, for respect and relationships. As things teeter on the brink, we long for that which is firm, solid, reliable, faithful, tested, lasting, sustainable and supporting. It is these very elements which are the definition of the Greek word alatheia which translates in English to “truth.”

We rejoice on this Trinity Sunday that we know that it is Jesus who is “the way, the truth, and the life.” We know this, for as Jesus said in the Gospel of John 14:26, “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.” Further Jesus says in John 16:13 and Matthew 11:27, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason, I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” ...“All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

We are among those to whom the truth has been revealed. That truth is that God is in control. It is God on whom people can rely and trust amidst the changing conditions and circumstances of life despite oppression, opposition, or suffering. To this we can say, “Amen”. Like the word alatheia, the word “Amen” translates as “firm, true, reliable, and trustworthy.” When we say, “Amen”, what we are saying is “I believe, and I promise to do what the King commands.”

And what does the LORD require of you? “To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8. To which Jesus adds, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.: John 13:34.

Jesus is “The Amen” faithful and true in whom all the promises of God find their “yes.” God is creator, redeemer, sustainer, and blesser. God is love, God is merciful, God is just, God is compassionate, God forgives, and even when the world is not at peace God grants peace beyond understanding to those who hear his voice and follow him. This is the peace that ends hostilities, restores relationships, maintains balance, establishes wholeness, and ushers in health.

In Matthew 28:16-20 the resurrected Jesus directed the apostles to, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

Following our Lord’s example, I pray that we too embody the qualities of truth and peace in all of our attitudes and actions so that we can become agents of healing and all persons can see that we are his disciples and desire for them to join us in fellowship with him and each other.

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy spirit be with you all.”

Amen
