Traditions of Our Church

The Moravian Star, the Advent Wreath, and Lovefeasts are
among the specials features of our church.

From the First Sunday in Advent (preparing for His coming) to Epiphany (the coming of the wise men) Moravians hang the Moravian Advent Star in the front of the sanctuary and in the front of their homes.  It is reminiscent of the star which led the wise men and symbolizes that Christ is the light come into the world, the greatest and morning star.

The Advent Wreath has been an old tradition throughout Christiandom.  When Advent comes a month before Christmas, many homes begin the symbolic use of their wreaths.  In order to symbolize  the Advent period of preparation four candles are embedded in a circle of evergreens.  On the first Sunday in Advent, one candle is lit; on the second Sunday, two candles are lit; on the third Sunday, three; and on the forth Sunday, four candles are lit, proclaiming Jesus "The Light of the World."

The Lovefeasts of the Moravian Church are reminiscent of the first century church's agape feasts (lovefeasts). They are not a sacrament but rather festival meals where all can come as brothers and sisters in Christ to break bread together in celebration and fellowship.  They consist of hymn services during which buns and coffee are shared.  At different times of the year there may be added to lovefeast a candle service or other appropriate service such as a wedding.
